Who we are
CamGlen Bike Town is a local not for profit cycling initiative and social enterprise based in Cambuslang & Rutherglen. It is part of Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust a charity that was set up to improve the lives and communities within the two towns.
What we do
We try to make it as easy as possible for people living and working in our areas on get on their bikes. There are several strands of our work that we carry out to make this happen:
We work with a range of organisations from local government to national cycling bodies to promote cycling to the wider public as well as working to create safer cycle ways for everyone using a bike.
Cycling should be a mode of transport that is available to everyone and that means making it affordable for any budget. We are constantly looking for bike donations that we can refurbish in our workshop and find a new, loving home for it.
The best thing about cycling we believe that is that is a community in itself that is open to anyone! All that is required is the ability to turn those wheels. Cycling is a great way to meet new people, get outside and see new things. We offer a range of activities that anyone from the G73 & G72 postcodes can take part in from guided rides, to cycling training and bike maintenance classes.
Look out for our logo at out and about in the community or in local events. We are always looking to increase the awareness of cycling and its benefits. You can usually see us chatting with someone on our Main Streets, at a local Gala Day or in one of the supermarkets telling them all about how wonderful cycling is!
To make all of the above possible, in accordance with wider Healthy n Happy strategy, Bike Town have needed to seek enterprising opportunities as a way of funding. In order to continue to carrying out our work in the community we have rented new premises where we will sell new and refurbished bikes, offer repairs and servicing and hire out space for events.
Why we do it
We do it because cycling is awesome! It has so many benefits from improving your mental and physical health, to saving you bag loads of money. From a community perspective it encourages greater interaction with your neighbours, encourages you to shop local and therefore improves the local economy and greatly reduces the carbon monoxide levels where you live.
Looking to the future
The Bike Shop
Having once previously housed our bike recycling centre in a shipping container on Downiebrae Road we have since upgraded and now find ourselves in wonderful industrial unit in Thompson Court. The Unit as it is affectionately called has opened up new opportunities for Bike Town, namely becoming one of Healthy n Happy’s principle social enterprises.
The Unit houses a fully stocked retail space, functioning workshop for repairs, servicing and maintenance classes and an event space which is available to hire.
The new space has also increased our capacity to offer opportunities to local residents through volunteering and training.
