It’s clear to us at Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust that walking and cycling has been a great release for many individuals in our communities in Cambuslang and Rutherglen. We’ve heard some wonderful stories about how people are keeping active physically, but how it is especially helping with their mental health to get out and about in nature. To continue to support families and individuals in our community to keep active during these times, we’re marking World Bicycle Day on 3 June. We’re also taking part in Bike Week, which runs from 6 – 14 June and celebrates all that’s great about cycling.
Cycling has so many benefits: If you cycle regularly in adulthood, you will enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger and who doesn’t want that! It increases muscle strength, improves joint mobility, improves mental health and decreases body fat levels. Plus, it’s a great fun family activity to enjoy the great outdoors, as well as being good for the environment with zero emissions. So as we start to ease out of lockdown why not ditch the car on your commute back to work or on your trip to the shops and enjoy all the benefits of cycling or walking.
We’d like to invite the community to take part in our ‘Bike Around Town’ adventures, which will run throughout Bike Week. We’ll be introducing ‘Biketag’ as a game, where we post a photo or video on social media in a particular beauty spot or place of interest we’ve cycled to in CamGlen. Participants have to guess the spot, cycle there and take a photo with their bike. Then post a photo of a new spot with their bike and so it continues. There are great prizes to be had so please encourage others to get involved.
We’ll also be running ‘Have you been here?’ – this is a chance for our community to share those hidden gems around our area. So we’ll ask you to post photos or videos on social media of suggested great walking or cycling routes around CamGlen. This is a great way of sharing the lovely places and green spaces we have in our local area. We’d love to see how you’ve embraced these adventures, so please tag us in your photos/videos using @camglenbiketown and #bikearoundtown.
Visit our Bike Town Facebook page to join in and play the game.
You can choose to play Bike Tag in either Rutherglen or Cambuslang.
Biketown is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 11am-3pm and is based at 5 Thomson Court, Rutherglen, G73 2RR.
